Hop, Skip, and Jump
We at HODINKEE are big fans of Nomos's classic, simple, and restrained designs. We love the solidity and overall cohesiveness of their designs. We also enjoy their seriousness, and well, how German they are.
Nomos comes across as pretty straight and buttoned up, and you wouldn't associate them with a sense of fun or whimsy. And that's ok, Nomos have a clear visual style that they don't really mess with very much.
But not always. It turns out that they do occasionally play around with their brand DNA, injecting some fun into their teutonic designs. Their recent limited editions demonstrate this perfectly.
First out of the gate is a trio of modified Tangente Sports, called, respectively, the Hop, Skip, and Jump. These replica watches (suspiciously released to coincide with the London Olympic Games) add a touch of neon to the usually monochrome dial. Ludwig Oberlehrer
Second, we've got a subtly playful take on the ultra-traditional Roman dialed Ludwig, the Ludwig Oberlehrer (Headmaster). At a distance, the Oberlehrer looks like a regular Ludwig, but get a little closer and you'll notice that the numerals, chapter ring, and dial text printing resembles chalk. The dial is also a slightly lighter grey, completing the illusion of wearing a tiny chalkboard on your wrist. It's a fun little detail, though one that's been done before by Rolf Sachs in the Fortis IQ. Nomos takes the concept and applies it more subtly, making a fake watch that manages to tread the right side of the quirky/gimmicky line. Like the Hop, Skip, and Jump, the Oberlehrer is limited to 100 pieces.
Aside from the slight plays on Nomos's traditional aesthetic, the other nice thing about these limited Nomos replica watches it that they retail for 100 euro less than their standard production counterparts. This is a nice change from most limited editions, which usually whack a little surcharge onto the sticker price. These limited editions are made for Wempe, and are only available in their stores.
Even when they're not being serious, Nomos is still a class act.
